Mersea Island
Situated at the mouth of the rivers Blackwater and Colne, some nine miles from Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, is connected to the mainland by the Strood, a causeway about half a mile long.
West Mersea
Popular with yachtsmen and dinghy sailor, also attracts wind surfers and water skiers (restricted areas). The population of around 7,000 may double or treble in the summer months with various caravan parks attracting
regular visitors and providing them with comprehensive leisure facilities. The town centre has much to offer with a variety of shops and services including banks, post office, library, Primary School, playgroups, community centre with sports and gym
facilities, pubs, garages and petrol station. The Glebe, recreation area in Colchester Road has hard tennis courts, football and cricket pitches. West Mersea Town Council has nine elected members and the Council Offices are open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 12 noon. There is a Civic Amenity site in Upland Road, open daily for domestic waste. Local Doctors and Dentists have surgeries in Kingsland Road and a variety of complementary medical services are available locally. The Mersea Island Directory published by Community News for West Mersea Town Council, delivered to all homes on the Island, has further details of these and other businesses serving the community.
East Mersea
East Mersea is a scattered settlement with a population of around 280 which remains relatively stable. The church of St Edmund has a long and interesting history
The village of East Mersea is divided into a number of scattered self contained areas. The junction of Meeting Lane and East Road contains the majority of key facilities including Post Office/General Store, Tea Rooms and Bistro, Village Hall, ‘Pick your Own’ business and nursery.
There is just one public house in East Mersea, no offices or professional services, the mobile police office and mobile library visit weekly. In addition there is
Cudmore Grove Country Park, an international Youth Camp and three holiday home sites

Tell us what you would like to read about, ask Ron a question on local/family history and we will do our best. We would especially like to hear from former natives/residents of Mersea Island and surrounding villages
Ron would like to hear from anyone interested in old local history especially relating to the waterside. He holds a massive collection of old Mersea photos and is still adding to this. In addition he has considerable knowledge on Old Thames Sailing Barges and produces watercolours of both as well as studying the Green Family Tree. It is not unusual to receive referrals, queries relating to his hobbies having gained a local reputation for knowing about Mersea, its people and past and he is as pleased to help as he is to hear more.
